Stave is a transcription app for Mac made by Akgunay Labs. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it. In short: Stave does not collect your data. Your recordings and transcripts stay on your Mac.
What stays on your Mac
- Recordings and imported files. Audio you record, and audio or video files you import, are stored in Stave's folder on your Mac.
- Transcripts and everything derived from them. Transcription, speaker separation, voice recognition, text clean-up and search all run on your Mac. Transcripts, speaker names, voice profiles, topics and your edits are stored on your Mac.
- Settings. Your preferences are stored on your Mac.
Stave does not upload any of this, and Akgunay Labs never receives it. Stave has no account or sign-in, and it contains no advertising, analytics or tracking code.
When Stave connects to the internet
Stave connects to the internet only for these things:
- Downloading speech models. On first use, and when you choose a model in Settings, Stave downloads its speech models from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). These are model files only; nothing about you or your recordings is sent.
- Transcribe from Link. When you paste a link, Stave contacts that link's service to find the recording and fetch its audio. Depending on the link, that can be the podcast's host or feed, Apple's podcast directory (to find an episode from an Apple Podcasts or Spotify link), Spotify (to read an episode's title) or YouTube. Those services receive the request like any web browser's request, including your IP address. Stave sends them nothing else, and the audio is transcribed on your Mac.
- Exporting. If you choose an Obsidian vault, Stave writes notes into that folder on your Mac. If that folder is synced by another service, that service's own policy applies.
Permissions
Stave asks macOS for access to your microphone, and to your call app's audio if you record calls, so it can record. It asks for the files and folders you choose to import or export to. You can change these at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
Deleting your data
Deleting a recording in Stave removes it and its transcript from your Mac. Removing Stave and its folder in your Library removes everything it stored.
Children
Stave is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new date.
